In Wajinja, children attend school year-round, six days a week, spending the majority of their time on school grounds. At the Bright Angels School, the only school serving the village, conditions were far from ideal. During his visit, Ernie Boch Jr. saw firsthand the challenges these students faced: deteriorating classrooms, limited access to clean water, and the absence of proper toilet facilities. Changing weather conditions frequently disrupted lessons, and the lack of basic infrastructure put children at risk for illness.

Determined to make a difference, Ernie began transforming Bright Angels School into a safe, healthy, and inspiring place to learn. He funded the construction of a new classroom block with three fully equipped classrooms and roofed an additional building to shield students from the elements. A solar power system was installed, followed by a connection to the national electrical grid, bringing reliable energy to the school for the first time.

To address water and sanitation needs, Ernie introduced a piped water supply and built separate male and female restroom wings, allowing students to focus on learning.

Classrooms were outfitted with desks, technology, and laptops, helping students develop digital literacy skills and adapt to an increasingly computerized world. Children were also provided beds for rest, replacing the overcrowded, unsanitary sleeping conditions they once endured.

The impact has been profound. Academic performance has climbed, and the school has become a catalyst for lasting change, empowering students and creating life-changing opportunities for both students and the wider community.
